Supreme Court Votes to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage Nationwide

Same-sex marriage has been through the ringer in California. Although it first became legal on June 16, 2008, this decision did not last for long. Proposition 8 was passed on November 5, 2008, a state constitutional amendment which effectively barred same-sex marriage in California. This lasted through June 27, 2013 – a long five years for same-sex couples hoping to get married.

Finally, on June 28, 2013, Proposition 8 was overturned and same-sex couples were again given permission to marry as they wished throughout California. The sense of relief and excitement was palpable, but it was only a taste of what was to come two years later on June 26, 2015.

That monumental date will forever be remembered as the date that same-sex marriage became legal in all 50 states across the country. The Supreme Court ruling of 5-4 was close, but it accomplished what numerous Americans had been pushing for years – marriage equality.

Does This Change Anything for California Couples?

Because same-sex marriage was already legal in California prior to the Supreme Court ruling, it seems that not much changed for couples residing in the state. However, one of the key benefits that comes from this ruling is that same-sex couples can now travel anywhere in the country without fearing that their marriage will be disregarded because of one state's opinion on the matter.

Same-sex couples in California now also have the ability to get divorced in other states. As ironic as it may seem to discuss divorce when marriage equality was just granted, it is often the best option for some couples and the freedom to separate can be liberating.

That is not to say that same-sex divorces are uncomplicated in nature.
